Parish Church of St. Martin Mistelbach

Chancel design

The new liturgical spaces are conceptually one unit, proportioned using the golden ratio, cut from one block. Altar and ambo combine to form the symbol of Jesus Christ. The cutting out of the ambo in its archetypal form from the altar works against the heaviness of the block and gives it lightness.

The new altar is positioned in the middle of the choir arch, at the interface between the choir room and the nave, as a connection between the congregation, people and the high altar, God. The ambo is located on the newly designed step leading up to the choir area, as a place of proclamation to the congregation. The word comes to the people. The sedilia are mobile and can therefore be arranged variably. They blend into the choir room through the choice of materials and colors. The materials follow the demand for simplicity and authenticity. Bianco Neve coarse white marble was chosen for the altar and ambo. The monolithic block with its crystalline structure shows the spiritual. The white of the stone as the absolute color of purity is tied back into the white of the church walls, house and altar as a symbol of the church itself. The grinding of the crystals conceptually illuminates the liturgical places. The altar cloth was felted from untreated, naturally dyed sheep’s wool in association with the “good shepherd”. The candlesticks are made of brushed bronze. The sedilia were made of solid, untreated oak and follow the concept of solidity and joining parts to form a unit.
