The Molitorgasse elementary school, a listed building dating back to 1888, is being renovated, converted and extended to accommodate the growing demand for all-day care.
The existing building was designed by Johann Schneider and Anton Heindl and a third storey was added in 1904. In 2014, an extension was added to the building on Dopplergasse.
The school is characterized in particular by its Montessori pedagogy and special and curative education.
While the street-side façades are richly decorated with ornamental elements typical of the Wilhelminian style, the courtyard façade has already been purified and thermally insulated.
The first floor of the existing building is half a storey above street level. In order to provide barrier-free access to the entire building, the new dining hall will be raised by half a storey in place of the existing gymnasium. The old building will be given an elevator.
A new structure with the main entrance will be created in the courtyard area, which will provide access to the central checkroom. From here, you can access the new exercise room in the basement, which is naturally lit via skylights. It has a separate entrance and can therefore be used by external clubs in the evening – a sustainable synergy.
Balcony shelves in front mediate between the half-storey offset levels of the existing building and the extension. The balconies serve as open classrooms and extend the staircase at the intermediate landings. This creates urgently needed multifunctional spaces.
The concept aims to maximize open spaces.
