The now listed kindergarten building in Vienna’s 10th district was built around 100 years ago.
However, it has not been thoroughly renovated since the early 1950s. The new design aims to close this gap.
Built-in units make use of the high rooms and thus maximize the play areas. They create niches for retreat and play, as well as storage space. Additional façade openings in the parapet area also give the children a direct view of the lush green inner courtyard and the street space. Room configurations can be flexibly changed with curtains so that the space can be optimally adapted to the different uses.
A new staircase with elevator in the inner courtyard meets the requirements for accessibility and evacuation.
It is positioned in such a way that it maintains a clear distance from the existing building and creates a new, independent spatial structure.
The staircase picks up on the theme of the traditional use of bricks in municipal buildings and implements it as an architectural accent.
