Junior High School, 1220 Vienna

EXTENSION BUILDING
CLIENT:Bauunternehmung Granit G.m.b.H.
COMPLETED:2017
SIZE:ca. 3000 m²
SPECIAL:Construction with timber, realization during full operation

Extension of the 1911 massive built school designed by Janesch und Schnell Architects which is now serving as a secondary school in Konstanziagasse 50. Today the school is situated in a heterogeneous urban context and it is classified as a historical monument.
The three-storey extension is located in the eastern wing exit of the existing school so that the park area and its valuable greenery remain intact. The unpretentious, partially undercut building is linked to the existing school through its one-storey fully glazed entrance.
Half of the gym has been sunk under the ground exposing both sides to daylight through opaque stripes of glassed skylights. The construction concept based on prefabricated concrete frames for the gym hall and reinforced concrete cores on the sides, serve as a framework to the prefabricated wooden construction, accelerating the building process and allowing the regular function of the existing school during the building time. These upper floors contain 7 classrooms, 2 EDP / group rooms, room for artistic education, central wardrobe, teachers’ and staff rooms with their corresponsive side rooms.
