Village Centre Großnondorf

FIRE STATION, CHAPEL OF REST, PARSONAGE
COMPETITION2001
CLIENTCouncil of Gunthersdorf (LA)
COMPLETION2007

The addition to the new fire station – which is across from the church – consists of a covered outdoor space, the village loggia, and lofty chapel of rest. The religious function defines the church square, which, because access to the fire station is on the side, is not disturbed by the fire trucks. The fire station and parsonage create a protected semi-public courtyard reminiscent of a town green and which is connected to the church square via a narrow passage between the fire station and the parsonage.
The municipal government and the church congregation joined forces to mobilize the residents of Grossnondorf to reinvigorate the neglected village core.
The archdiocese made the parsonage – vacant and in dire need of refurbishment – available for public use (e.g. youth groups, music room, shop, fire-crew room, guest apartment) as well as the adjacent property (for the erection of the new fire station).
The refurbishment and construction was to a great extent design-build. Through their active participation in this architectural experiment, the residents identify strongly with their new building.
The clarity of the building massing provides articulation to the central ensemble. The residents are responsible for the execution – and the results are dependent upon their skills and qualifications.
