ALTAR DESIGN MARIA HITZING VIENNA
COMPETITION:2003, 1st prize
CLIENT:Archdiocese Vienna
ADRESS:Am Platzl 1, Vienna, 13th district

The rays surrounding the Mother of God, by Matthias Steindl, are point of departure for a reinterpretation of the church's liturgical sites. In this manner the design becomes integrated in the historic space.
The wooden miraculous figure is sheathed in a precious silver cloak, while the liturgical furnishings are of stone, and the people's altar, pulpit and baptismal font are in brass and marble. Brass "rays" are employed to support the altar, the site of the Lord's Supper; the pulpit, from which the Word of God is proclaimed; and the baptismal font. With its smoothened finish, the white, crystalline marble from Naxos reinforces the immaterial appearance.
The new people's altar stands in the center of the sanctuary, which is nearly square in plan.
The radial metallic bands originating at the people's altar respect the existing spatial geometry.
The ray along the longitudinal axis determines the relationship of the pulpit to the existing tabernacle at the historic high altar.
